Process Server’s Car Stolen

Bryon Mcelderry is a process server in New York.  He has documented many of his experiences as a server on video.  Obviously,  the ones he published on YouTube are, no doubt, some of the more dramatic endeavors.  After all, who wants to spend their day watching everyday, run-of-the-mill serves?  The vast majority of serving of processes are what most of us would consider to be boring and uneventful.  An uneventful experience is what we should strive for in commercial aviation as well as in serving legal documents.  I would like to make some observations in regard to one of Mr. Mcelderry’s brief videos titled, “Showdown in the slums/Feud on the Farm.

The first episode shows Bryon’s SUV being stolen.Allow me to list some “vehicle basics” which may or may not apply to this particular video:  ALWAYS lock your vehicle while in the process of serving papers!  It’s too late to lock the barn is the horse is stolen.  Keep cell phone and keys securely on your person.  Keep all valuables and identifying papers in the vehicle out of sight.  Carry a high lumen rated, pocket flashlight with you after dark.  Keep a backup in your vehicle.  If at all possible. park your vehicle out of sight of the targeted address.  Never park directly in front of or in the driveway of a residence that you are going to.  Park in a way as to avoid being blocked for an easy exit.  This may not be possible if the home has a long private driveway.  Leave the vicinity immediately once the serve or attempted serve has been made.  Park in a well lit public parking lot to log in your notes of the endeavor while it is fresh on your mind.  Use a dependable vehicle for your work… keeping it well maintained is a must.

I admire Mr. Mcelderry’s aggressiveness in his attempt to locate a defendant with a criminal record of violence in a rough neighborhood.  This  would be an extremely dangerous and difficult task  for anyone in this business.  Looks like Bryon is the right man for this kind of job.  More about the confrontations with these irate defendants and an additional video in next week’s publication.
